Best foods for healthy teeth

There are many factors that contribute to your dental health. This does not just include brushing and flossing, but also what you eat everyday! Your diet can play a major role in the overall health of your teeth and gums.

It is commonly broadcasted that excess sugar, acidic and staining foods should be avoided, however there is limited discussion of what foods are healthy for your teeth!

Fruits and Vegetables

The high-fibre fruits and vegetables physically clean the teeth similar to the way your toothbrush might and also stimulates saliva production due to the additional chewing required. This will help reduce plaque build-up.

Citrus fruits such as oranges are also great! Vitamin C strengthens blood vessels and connective tissue. This can slow down the progression of gum disease by reducing inflammation.

Water

The human body is 50-65% water, therefore staying hydrated is very important. What you may not know is that saliva is 99.5% water, therefore being dehydrated can thicken your saliva. This can disrupt the breaking down of food and neutralising bacteria acid in your mouth. Ensuring that you drink the recommended 2-3L of water a day will help to prevent tooth decay and bad breath

Cheese

Cheese is actually a superfood for your teeth! Not only is it high in phosphate and calcium, but it also helps balance the pH level in your mouth. This works to combat the acid in your food, preventing decay and cavities

Fish

While calcium protects your teeth and gums from disease, it cannot be absorbed if you don’t have enough Vitamin D in your diet. Fish is a great source of Vitamin D, working with calcium to keep your teeth and gums safe from disease.
